About the Workshop

1 - Goals
Nanoscale science and technology has made significant advancements in Latin America in the past decade as evidenced by publications, patents and investment. Research and education has also made enormous strides. This workshop therefore aims to highlight these features, through speakers from Latin America, US and Canada. It is also anticipated to feature ensuing innovations in nanotechnology as an engine for economic development in Latin America. It is proposed to focus on about four of these strong areas, plus have a concluding session(s) for a round table open discussion on future areas of potentially strong collaborative research and innovation, and a plan for “the way forward”.

A series of workshops on Science and Technology in Latin America have been undertaken. The 1st Latin American S&T Forum was held in Washington DC on April 15, 2004. This first forum provided the participating organizations the opportunity to present their countries overall investment strategy in science and technology. The 2nd Latin American S&T Forum was held in Santiago, Chile, on October 25 and 26, 2005. It was focused on biotechnology, a field where Latin American countries have made substantial scientific contributions. A follow-up workshop on nanoscale science and technology is proposed to maintain the high level of regional enthusiasm and commitment created by the above-mentioned workshops and allow for more substantive regional dialogue on nanoscale science technology as well as innovation.

2 - Workshop Format
The first two days will focus on Nanoscale Science and Technology followed by interactions on day 3, focusing on collaborations in the region. The purpose is to:

  • Foster advanced knowledge exchange on nanoscience and nanotechnology among multi-sector partners throughout the Americas.
  • Highlight Latin American advancements in nanoscale research, technology, and education over the past decade, focusing on four major areas: (1) Energy and Environment; (2) Biotechnology; (3) Multifunctional Materials and Devices; and (4) Computation/Modeling/Metrology.
  • Feature innovations in nanotechnology as an engine for economic development in Latin America by inviting leaders to make presentations on “leading edge” research and technologies.
  • Develop projects that integrate research, education, and innovation/technology development in areas of economic and social importance to the region.
  • Support the development of a network as a sustainable infrastructure for regional cooperation in nanotechnology research, education, and technology development.
3 - Invited Talks
Approximately 45 participants will be invited to give talks according to their expertise in the synergistic research areas addressed by the workshop, and according to their role as leaders in the Pan-American nanotechnology community.

Care will be taken to ensure broad participation from all parts of the region, and a good balance of sector, experience, gender, and science and engineering disciplines. Other potential invitees will be identified through research and agency recommendation.

4 - Contributed Posters
All participants are encouraged to submit abstracts for poster presentation of their detailed research work. Institutional posters disclosing detaisl of regional or local facilities are allowed (an abstract should be placed also for this kind of poster).

The available poster space is limited to 2m(high) x 1m(width) area.
