The City of Rio de
Janeiro
|
|
Rio de
Janeiro sits on the South-east part of Brazil and is one of the
most beautiful and famous towns in world, for its beaches,
Carnival, football and people. During December, the month of the
conference, the temperature during day time is usually around
28-32 degrees Celsius. The population of Rio is over 6 million
people. Rio hosts the largest Federal University in Brazil,
UFRJ, with over 40 thousand students, besides the State
University (~ 10 thousand students) and a number of private
universities. Tens of miles of sand beaches, beautiful mountains,
museums and a warm people render Rio the fair title of "Marvelous
City" (Cidade Maravilhosa). Some traditional attractions
are the Sugar-Loaf Mountain (walking distance from the
conference place), the Copacabana Beach (just in front of the
conference hotel), and the Corcovado Christ Mountain (which will
be visited during our social event), from whose top we have an
astonishing view of the whole town. Language in Brazil is
Portuguese but the official language at the conference is
English. Most people on shops and restaurants have a "working
knowledge" of English language.
The
currency - The currency in Brazil is the "Real" (R$).
Exchange rate to US dollar is at the present about 1 U$ = 3.5
R$.

The
conference will take place at the Centro Brasileiro de Pesquisas
Físicas (CBPF), one of the research institutes of the Ministry
of Science and Technology of Brazil. Information about the
history of the Institute, its research lines, telephone and
e-mails can be found at www.cbpf.br
. CBPF is located less than 2 miles away from the conference
hotel, and transportation will be arranged by the organizers.

Getting to the Hotel
|
|
The best way
to get from Rio de Janeiro International Airport to the hotel is
by taxi. We strongly recommend participants to look for taxi
companies desks, where the taxi drivers have to be prepaid. There are various
companies, with highly trained and very professional taxi
drivers. The
attendants at information desks in the airport are all
English-speakers and can instruct passengers if necessary. The
airport is about 20 miles from the hotel, and the taxi run
should be around R$ 50 (~ U$ 14). Since the conference starts on
Monday morning, December 2nd,
we recommend participants to arrive on Sunday evening.
